Chakras - a guide for beginners

What are Chakras?

Chakra work was widely practised by ancient civilisations, and is once again becoming a popular type of healing therapy and way of life. Why? It's simple. More and more people are experiencing the benefits of keeping their Chakras balanced. 


What  exactly are Chakras? They are energy hubs within us that carry vital Life Force Energy through our body. Without this, we would not exist. At its core, Chakra balancing is rooted in the aim of keeping our Chakras open and aligned so our Life Force Energy is constantly free-flowing. As a result, we feel healthy, happy and fulfilled. 


We have seven major Chakras which run from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Each Chakra relates to our security, creativity, power, ability to love, communication, intuition and spirituality. 


When our Chakras are not balanced, undesirable traits can surface, such as feelings of anger, jealousy or lack - these are a few examples, but there are many more signs that reveal imbalanced Chakras.

The SACRAL CHAKRA governs our emotions, sexuality and pleasure.

  • Emotional excess or deficiency. 

The SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA governs our growth, self esteem and will power.

  • Powerlessness 
  • Weak will
  • Fear
  • Anxiety
  • Passivity 
  • Anger
  • Aggressiveness
  • Domineering  behaviour
  • Vengefulness 
  • Indecision. 

The HEART CHAKRA governs our ability to give & receive love and forgive.

 

Signs of imbalance:


  • Grief
  • Despair
  • Shyness
  • Feelings of isolation / loneliness
  • Jealousy
  • Envy
  • Worthlessness
  • Feelings of not being good enough/rejection.

The THROAT CHAKRA governs our communication.

 

Signs of imbalance:


  • Communication issues
  • Excess / deficient speaking
  • Lying
  • Voice is too loud / too quiet
  • Inability to listen
  • Withdrawal.


The THIRD EYE CHAKRA governs our intuition, understanding and imagination.

  

Signs of imbalance:

 

  • Clouded / negative thinking
  • Memory / concentration issues
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Insomnia / sleep issues
  • Nightmares.


The CROWN CHAKRA governs our sense of being and clarity. 


Signs of imbalance:


  • Narrow mindedness 
  • Egotism 
  • Apathy 
  • Obsessive thinking 
  • Spiritual addiction
  • Dissociation from reality.

Why is it important to balance my Chakras?

Put simply, our feelings and emotions, no matter how good or bad the experience, affect our Chakra health. So it's important we don't hold on to the bad as these emotions can get trapped in our energy field, in our Aura and Chakras affecting how we feel.  


We can all recall traumatic memories or experiences and no matter how much time has passed, we're usually able to feel that exact emotion from the past when triggered. Often these are negative emotions and experiences which get stuck in our energy field and linger in all we do - making us feel unwell or manifest into undesired feelings to more physical symptoms. 


We each hold the power to be the best version of ourselves but seldom do we tap into the wonderful energy that we all hold, and use it to work for us, rather than against us.

YOU CAN SUPPORT YOUR CHAKRAS WITH FOOD AND ESSENTIAL OILS

Chakras can often become blocked, causing emotional and physical issues.

Alongside energy healing, eating a rainbow coloured diet and using essential oils can support general Chakra balancing efforts through self care. Here is some inspiration if you want to focus on a particular Chakra.

 

- Support your ROOT CHAKRA balancing efforts to:


  • build on your personal security and foundation
  • think red food: strawberries, tomatoes, radishes, beetroot and root vegetables
  • essential oils to use: sandalwood and ylang ylang.

  

- Support your SACRAL CHAKRA balancing efforts with regards to:

 

  • your emotions, creativity and sensuality 
  • think orange food: pumpkin, oranges, peaches, and honey
  • essential oils to use: jasmine and orange.


- Support your SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA balancing efforts if you need help with:


  • your self esteem, expansion, will and personal power
  • think yellow food: bananas, lemons, pineapples, turmeric and yellow curry
  • essential oils to use: bergamot and lemon.


- Support your HEART CHAKRA balancing efforts if you need help with:


  • giving, receiving love or forgiveness
  • think green food: spinach, kale, broccoli, avocado, fresh herbs such as basil and coriander
  • essential oils to use: rose and eucalyptus. 

  

- Support your THROAT CHAKRA balancing efforts if you need help with:


  • your communication
  • think blue food: blueberries, red cabbage and eggplant
  • essential oils to use: geranium and chamomile.


- Support your THIRD EYE CHAKRA balancing efforts if you need help with:


  • developing your intuition
  • think purple food: purple kale & sweet potato and blackberries
  • essential oils to use: frankincense and patchouli.

 

- Support your CROWN CHAKRA balancing efforts through:


  • detoxing your body to flush out toxins and boost your energy
  • meditation is a great way to heal 
  • essential oils to use: lavender and frankincense.
